Balancing Shift Work and Family Life

Airline schedules don't follow the school calendar. Here's how crew families stay connected when work happens at all hours, weekends and holidays included.

Airline work runs on its own clock. You may start before sunrise, finish after midnight, work weekends and miss holidays, especially early in your career. Meanwhile, school, sports, birthdays and family dinners all run on a nine-to-five world. Balancing the two takes planning, honest conversations and a little creativity. Here's how crew families make it work.

Put everything on one shared calendar

When your schedule changes often, a shared calendar is the single most helpful tool. Put your shifts, your partner's schedule, the kids' events and appointments all in one place that everyone can see. Update it as soon as you trade or pick up a shift. It cuts down on "I didn't know you were working" surprises and helps you spot conflicts early, while there's still time to trade.

Have a backup plan for child care

Early starts and late finishes don't always line up with day care or school hours. Most crew parents need a backup: a family member, a trusted neighbor, another crew family or a sitter who can cover the gaps. Line up your backups before you need them. Some crew families trade child care with each other, since they understand the schedules.

Make your days off count

Your days off may fall on a Tuesday instead of a Saturday. That can actually be a gift. Weekday outings are less crowded, and a Tuesday breakfast together or a school pickup can mean a lot. Plan a little family time into each stretch of days off, even if it's simple, so it doesn't get swallowed by errands.

Create small routines that travel with you

When you can't be there in person, small routines keep you connected:

Celebrate on a different day

If you have to work a holiday or a birthday, celebrate on another day. Kids often care more about the celebration than the date on the calendar. "Our Thanksgiving is Friday" can become a family tradition. Our holiday trading game plan can also help you get the days that matter most.

Trade for the moments that matter

You can't get every event off, so decide which ones matter most: the school play, the championship game, the anniversary dinner. Then start trading for those early. Being flexible about the smaller things gives you room to protect the big ones. Our Trading 101 guide explains how trades work.

Talk honestly as a family

Shift work affects everyone at home, not just you. Talk about what's working and what isn't. Your partner may need more help on certain days. Your kids may want more time with you on a particular weeknight. Let them know when you're tired after a long stretch, and ask for patience. Teamwork at home makes the hard weeks easier.

Take care of yourself too

It's easy to give all your free time to family and none to rest. But a worn-out parent or partner isn't much fun to be around. Protect your sleep, and don't stack too many extra shifts in a row. Our guide to picking up extra shifts without burning out can help you find the balance.
